What is osteopathy?

Osteopaths use a range of manual physical techniques to move, stretch and massage a patient’s joints and muscles. The osteopath first makes a detailed functional assessment of their patient before creating a tailored treatment plan to restore physical wellbeing. The aim is to treat not only the presenting symptoms but also, more importantly, their root cause.

Osteopathy uses techniques like mobilisation, which gently loosens and eases the pain of stiff joints, and manipulation, a targeted high velocity thrust to ease joint restriction. An osteopath’s toolkit also includes therapies such as deep tissue massage (to aid lymphatic drainage), taping, dry needling and acupuncture, and exercise therapy among others. Treatment goals include increased mobility and flexibility, a reduction or elimination of pain, increased blood supply to tissues, and activation of the body’s self-healing mechanism.
Following a clinic appointment, osteopaths will often prescribe rehabilitation exercises and lifestyle changes to reinforce treatment benefits and prevent injury from reoccurring.
